Blood Products & SafetyThe Blood Products and Safety Portfolio made major innovative advances in four major research areas of Blood Product Safety and immunohematological applications. Several projects had major success in obtaining 510-K licensure and FDA approval, ranging from a new approach for a rapid screening test card for the determination of blood types, to a multi-active sprayable hydrogel dressing for the instant treatment of battlefield injuries and wound care , to Pathogen Inactivation (PI) of blood products by two different technologies, and a blood warming pump that provides active thermal resuscitation which raises core body temperature of hypothermic patients during severe hemorrhage. The portfolio is engaging in a study of the current practices and future advancements in Blood Management and Effectiveness, to facilitate input for improving a multimodality training program on transfusion practices, ranging from bloodless medicine to the value of genomic typing of red cell antigens. Lastly, the portfolio has been active in bridging the translational relationships between technology gaps and clinical applications, with its DoD partners to provide improved blood transfusion products and advanced laboratory testing in support of military operational medicine. |
